Paintbrushes are how you change the look of your pet- From animated, to holiday- these are basically overlays that change your pets look. They do not pass down through genetics- your pet has its original genes. Think of it more like wearing clothes.

You use a paintbrush my acquiring it by either buying it, from events.. or the other many ways.
Then you simply go to it in your inventory (its under the "Pet paints" tab)

Then you just choose an adopt and click "choose this adopt" And it will change your pet into the paintbrush pet instead!
